Ashutosh Gowariker Appointed Director of 57th International Film Festival of India

New Delhi, May 1: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India has appointed filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker as the director of the 57th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), set to take place in Goa.

Gowariker is known for directing acclaimed films such as “Lagaan,” “Swades,” and “Jodhaa Akbar.” He has played a significant role in giving Indian cinema a global identity. His association with IFFI dates back to 1984, when he first participated in the festival, and he has also served as the chair of the international cinema jury in 2024.

Expressing his happiness over the appointment, Gowariker stated, “It is a matter of great pride and joy for me to serve as the director of the prestigious 57th International Film Festival of India in Goa. Witnessing the growth of this festival has been a fortunate experience for me. Being associated with it from 1984 to 2024 has been a memorable journey.”

He added, “It is a great honor for me to carry forward this legacy that has been ongoing since 1952, and it also brings a new sense of responsibility. I am eager to work closely with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Goa government.”

The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in Asia. Established in 1952, it is now considered the largest cinema festival in South Asia.

Organized annually with the support of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Goa government, the festival features international competitions, classic film screenings, masterclasses, tribute programs, and the Waves Film Market among its attractions.

The event brings together filmmakers, emerging talents, and actors from around the world on a single platform. The 57th edition, scheduled for November 2026 in Goa’s picturesque coastal region, promises to be even more expansive, showcasing various languages, genres, and new technologies while promoting cultural exchange.
