Kolkata, April 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah made significant remarks regarding West Bengal’s political future on Thursday. He stated that a BJP victory in the Bhawanipur assembly seat would pave the way for a change in power across the state.
The Bhawanipur seat is witnessing a direct contest between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari. During a roadshow prior to Adhikari’s nomination, Shah remarked, “BJP is steadily moving towards its target of winning 170 seats. However, there is a shortcut; if the voters in Bhawanipur secure a win here, it will lead to a change in power throughout Bengal.”
Shah recalled that in the 2021 elections, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram seat, although Banerjee later formed the government. He added, “This time, I have advised Suvendu Adhikari to contest from both Nandigram and Bhawanipur. I am confident that this time, the Trinamool Congress and the Chief Minister will face defeat.”
He also mentioned that he would be present in West Bengal for 16 days in various phases until the elections conclude, maintaining continuous communication with the public.
Tensions escalated during Suvendu Adhikari’s nomination as Amit Shah’s convoy approached the Alipore Survey Building. Reports emerged of Trinamool Congress supporters gathering near Harish Chatterjee Street, close to the residences of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.
Trinamool supporters attacked BJP workers, resulting in one serious injury. Following this, BJP supporters retaliated, heightening tensions in the area. Police had to resort to a lathi charge to control the situation. Meanwhile, the BJP raised questions about the police’s handling of the incident, asking how opposition supporters were allowed to gather despite the security of the Union Home Minister.
