Amina Orfi Makes History at World Squash Championship, Mustafa Successfully Defends Title

New Delhi, May 17: Young Egyptian player Amina Orfi delivered an outstanding performance to claim the title at the CIB Palm Hills PSA World Championship 2026. Meanwhile, world number one Mustafa Asal successfully defended his title.

Competing in front of a home crowd at Golf Central Palm Hills, Orfi showcased one of the most memorable performances in recent women’s squash history, while Asal exhibited remarkable skill to retain his championship. All eyes were on Orfi, who became the youngest female world champion by defeating eight-time world champion Nour El Sherbini in a thrilling five-game match. The 18-year-old secured victory after 106 minutes of intense play, winning 6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 14-12, saving two championship points in the final game.

This victory etched Orfi’s name in the record books, making her the youngest player to win a women’s world title, surpassing El Sherbini. Orfi’s triumph also prevented El Sherbini from claiming her ninth world championship crown. The final was the longest women’s world championship match played under the modern point-a-rally scoring system, which consists of 11 points, and is among the longest professional women’s squash matches to date.

Throughout the tournament, Orfi’s title run was marked by her resilience and patience. Before defeating El Sherbini in the final, she had already won another marathon match in the semifinals, where she triumphed over world number one Hania El Hammamy after 103 minutes of play. With this achievement, Orfi became the first woman to hold both the World Junior Championship and Senior PSA World Championship titles simultaneously.

In the men’s final, Asal established his dominance with a straight-game victory over fellow Egyptian Yusuf Ibrahim. The top seed controlled the match from the start, winning 11-4, 11-1, 12-10 to secure the championship.

Although Ibrahim managed to compete in the third game, the 27-year-old could not maintain the pressure against the defending champion. Despite preparing for shoulder surgery next week, Ibrahim had reached the biggest match of his career by defeating number two seed Paul Coll and former world champion Karim Abdel Gawad in the earlier rounds. Asal’s successful title defense earned him his second PCA World Championship title, marking his 29th PCA Tour title overall.
