Algeria Faces Setback as Star Goalkeeper Luka Zidanes World Cup Participation Uncertain

Algiers, April 28: Algeria, making its return to the FIFA World Cup after 12 years, has received a significant blow. Star goalkeeper Luka Zidane has suffered fractures to his jaw and chin, casting doubt on his participation in the upcoming multi-national tournament.

The injury occurred during a Spanish second division match where Granada faced Almeria. Zidane sustained a concussion after colliding with opposing striker Thalis. Following the injury, he had to be substituted.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the club announced, “Medical examinations revealed fractures in the goalkeeper’s jaw and chin. The player will consult with the club’s medical staff to decide on the next steps for his treatment in the coming hours.”

Luka, 27, is the son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane. His injury raises concerns about his ability to play for the remainder of the season, putting his selection for the FIFA World Cup in jeopardy.

Luka previously represented France at youth levels but was selected to play for Algeria last year, the country of his grandparents.

In Algeria, Luka has had promising opportunities. He started in four out of five matches during last year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Additionally, he played in a friendly match against Uruguay last month.

Algeria has qualified for the FIFA World Cup five times (1982, 1986, 2010, 2014, 2026). Their best performance came in 2014 when they reached the Round of 16. The country is known for its historic upsets, having defeated West Germany in 1982 and becoming the first African nation to win two matches in a single tournament in 1986.

Algeria has been placed in Group J, alongside FIFA World Cup 2022 champions Argentina, Jordan, and Austria. Algeria will kick off its campaign against Argentina on June 16.
