Akali Dal to Assist Farmers Affected by Rain Damage in Punjab

Chandigarh, April 7: The Akali Dal has announced plans to assist farmers in Punjab who have suffered crop damage due to recent rainfall. Sukhbir Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), stated on Tuesday that the party is preparing a program to support farmers whose crops across 125,000 acres have been devastated. He criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for neglecting these distressed farmers.

While addressing a rally in Budhlada as part of the party’s ‘Punjab Bachao’ campaign, Badal said, “We are developing a program to provide affected farmers with wheat, as well as green and dry fodder.” The details of this initiative will be finalized during a meeting of the party’s district presidents and block in-charges in Chandigarh on Wednesday. He emphasized that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has abandoned the farmers, who have yet to receive compensation for rice crops lost in last year’s floods.

Badal pointed out that despite the recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms destroying wheat crops on 125,000 acres, no immediate compensation has been provided, contrary to the promises made by the AAP. He criticized AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for falsely claiming that the Punjab government compensated farmers at a rate of ₹50,000 per acre within a month of last year’s floods.

He questioned, “It is clear that incidents of sacrilege in Punjab began after AAP came to power in 2014, yet the Chief Minister claims I am responsible. If that is the case, why doesn’t he file a case against me?”

Badal also discussed how AAP and Congress have joined forces in a desperate attempt to curb the growing influence of SAD in the state. He noted that Punjab Congress president Raja Amarinder Singh Warring is echoing the Chief Minister’s rhetoric.

Additionally, Badal announced plans to establish a veterinary college in Mansa and a hospital at par with AIIMS. He pledged to rebuild all link roads and construct roads connecting all ‘dhanis’ (small settlements). Furthermore, he assured that concrete lanes and drains would be built in all 12,500 villages, ensuring that every family has a ‘pucca’ (permanent) house.

Speaking at the event, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal highlighted that the previous SAD government had invested ₹800 crore in irrigation projects in Budhlada alone. She criticized the AAP government for its repeated failures to provide compensation to farmers, whether due to floods, bollworm attacks, or hailstorms.
