Ajit Agarkar Seeks Extension as Chief Selector Until 2027 ODI World Cup

New Delhi, March 19: Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, has requested an extension of his tenure from the BCCI. He aims to remain in his position until the ODI World Cup in 2027.

According to reports, Agarkar reached out to the BCCI after the Indian team secured victory in the T20 World Cup 2026. He expressed his desire to continue as chief selector through the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The BCCI is currently considering Agarkar’s request. There is also speculation about a former Indian cricketer being a potential successor to Agarkar, but no decision has been made by the board yet.

Agarkar took over as the head of the selection committee in June 2023. Following an extension, his term is set to last until June 2026. His tenure has been notably successful, with India winning two T20 World Cups and one Champions Trophy. The team also clinched the Asia Cup titles in 2023 and 2025.

However, results in Test cricket have been disappointing. The Indian team failed to qualify for the final of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. They also faced a clean sweep in the home series against New Zealand and South Africa. Key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have stepped away from Test cricket, while Ashwin has retired from all formats. This uncertainty regarding their future in Test cricket has been attributed to the selection committee’s decisions.

Under Agarkar’s leadership, the Indian team has excelled in limited-overs cricket, dominating ICC and ACC competitions. Whether the BCCI will extend Agarkar’s tenure remains to be seen in the coming days.
