Chennai, April 2: The admission process for private schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act has officially commenced in Tamil Nadu. The School Education Department has released a complete schedule for the new academic session, stating that the admission process will conclude by May 29.
This year’s process is starting on time, unlike last year when there were significant delays. Preparations began on April 2, and on April 6, the department will inform private schools about the number of seats they need to reserve under the RTE. This figure will be determined based on data from the Education Management Information System (EMIS).
To maintain transparency, all eligible private schools have been instructed to display the number of seats available under the 25% RTE quota on their premises starting April 7. A consolidated list of all school seats will be published online on April 15, allowing parents to easily access information and make informed choices.
The application process for admissions will begin on April 20 and will continue until May 18. During this period, parents must apply through the official online portal. The entire process will be completed by May 29.
Under the RTE Act, 25% of seats in entry-level classes (LKG and Class 1) in private, non-minority schools are reserved for children from economically weaker sections. This initiative provides around 85,000 children with access to quality education each year.
Clear eligibility criteria have also been established. Priority will be given to children residing within one kilometer of the school. For LKG admissions, children must have been born between August 1, 2021, and July 31, 2022. For Class 1, the birth date range is set from August 1, 2019, to July 31, 2020.
If the number of applications exceeds the available seats, a lottery system will be implemented on May 22 to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.
Last year, admissions were delayed until October due to funding issues under the Samagra Shiksha scheme. However, with the timely start of this year’s process, officials are optimistic that admissions will proceed smoothly, benefiting as many children as possible.
