Kolkata, June 23: Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and MP from Diamond Harbour, has approached the Calcutta High Court for permission to travel abroad for medical treatment. He presented his case before Justice Sougata Bhattacharya. A hearing on this petition is expected by the end of the week.
According to sources, Banerjee intends to seek treatment for his eyes abroad and has requested the court for a seven-day travel allowance.
Currently, there are no direct legal restrictions preventing him from traveling abroad. However, he is involved in several pending cases, and the court has directed him to cooperate with the investigations related to these matters. This is why he has sought the court’s permission for his overseas trip.
It is noteworthy that Banerjee suffered a severe eye injury in a road accident while returning to Kolkata from a party event in Murshidabad district in October 2016. After receiving initial treatment in various hospitals across the country, he also underwent treatment abroad.
Meanwhile, internal strife within the TMC has intensified following the party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Party MLA and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, along with his supporters, has adopted a rebellious stance against Abhishek Banerjee, declaring themselves the ‘real opposition’ in the Assembly.
On Monday, the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee held a special meeting at a hotel in New Town, Kolkata, where they formed a new national executive. Notably, neither Mamata Banerjee nor Abhishek Banerjee was included in this new committee. Arup Roy, the MLA from Howrah Madhya, has been appointed as the party president.
