BJP Approaches Historic Majority in Maharashtra Legislative Council Amidst Opposition Turmoil

Mumbai, June 23: Following the results of the Legislative Council elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as a formidable force in Maharashtra’s upper house. Meanwhile, the opposition is embroiled in internal conflict over the Leader of Opposition (LOP) position.

Currently, the 73-member assembly has the BJP holding 35 seats, bringing them close to a full majority on their own. The BJP has solidified its position as an undeniable power in Maharashtra’s parliament. With recent seat reorganization, passing any legislative bill has become significantly easier for the saffron party, granting them immediate advantages in the assembly.

To achieve a simple majority in the 78-member Legislative Council, 39 seats are required. Political analysts believe that if the remaining five seats, traditionally appointed by the governor, are filled soon, the BJP could reach a majority on its own. Out of the 12 seats typically appointed by the governor, seven have already been filled. Discussions within the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition suggest that the BJP is likely to secure three of the remaining five seats, while one seat each may go to Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP.

If these appointments are finalized, the BJP’s seat count would increase from 35 to 38, just one seat shy of a full majority. By the end of this year, biennial elections for graduate and teacher seats will take place. Analysts view this as a golden opportunity for the BJP to settle old political scores and increase their seat count. If the party wins three out of these five seats, their total could exceed 40, granting them a majority on their own.

This growth signals a rapid expansion of the Legislative Council. Just two months ago, the house had only 47 active members, significantly reducing its size. However, the appointment of nine members through the state assembly in May, followed by the election of 17 members from local authority constituencies, has increased the total to 73.

In the meantime, political alliances continue to shift. Independent candidate Gokul Gite, who won from the Nashik local authority constituency, has officially joined Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, raising the party’s MLA count to 12.

Ram Shinde from the BJP currently holds the president’s position. A decision regarding the vice president’s role is expected this week, with a strong possibility of Dr. Neelam Gorhe from Shinde’s Shiv Sena returning to the post.

While the ruling coalition strengthens its power, the opposition remains mired in internal disputes. Both the Congress and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) have laid strong claims for the vacant opposition position. A decision on who will lead the opposition bench is unlikely to be made in the early days of the current session.
