TMC Bank Accounts Under Cyber Police Investigation in Kolkata

Kolkata, June 23: The Cyber Police of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, has initiated a detailed investigation into three bank accounts associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Recently, these accounts were subjected to a debit freeze under police orders.

Sources linked to the ongoing investigation at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station revealed that officials are meticulously examining transactions from the past five years. The focus of the inquiry is to trace the origins of the funds and determine where the money was sent from these accounts.

Investigators are also looking into other aspects related to these accounts, such as when they were opened, who registered them, and which individuals (authorized signatories) operated them over the years.

Transaction records are being analyzed closely due to allegations that money obtained through extortion and illegal commissions was deposited into these accounts. Investigators are also probing claims that funds from such activities were later withdrawn for other unlawful purposes.

This investigation was launched following complaints from several rebel TMC legislators at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station. In their complaints, the legislators alleged that money collected through extortion was stored in the three bank accounts.

Based on these complaints, the police registered an FIR and commenced the investigation. In the initial phase, authorities instructed the bank to freeze the three accounts.

Recently, the party’s former treasurer and ex-minister for sports and power in the Mamata Banerjee government, Arup Biswas, wrote to a private bank requesting the freezing of these accounts. In his letter, he cited disputes over control of party funds due to internal conflicts within the Trinamool Congress.

Meanwhile, a faction of the TMC loyal to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, approached the Calcutta High Court on Monday, challenging the decision to freeze the accounts.

In their petition, the party requested the court to intervene to ascertain under whose orders and on what basis the debit freeze was imposed on the three accounts.
