Kolkata, June 23: The Calcutta High Court has granted permission to Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the party’s national general secretary, to travel abroad for eye treatment. Banerjee had filed a petition seeking approval for his overseas trip, which the court has now approved.
The petition was submitted to Justice Sougata Bhattacharya’s court, where Banerjee requested permission for a week-long foreign trip. He sought relief from a travel ban imposed due to allegations of making inflammatory statements.
The court accepted his petition and granted him permission to travel abroad. Further hearings on this matter are expected to take place later this week.
Previously, Banerjee had traveled abroad for eye treatment after receiving permission from the Calcutta High Court. That order was issued by Justice Vivek Chaudhary in connection with a coal smuggling case.
The current case pertains to alleged inflammatory remarks made during election campaigning in Bidhannagar. Justice Sougata Bhattacharya’s single bench had previously imposed a travel ban on Banerjee in this matter. He approached the court seeking relief from this restriction.
The TMC MP’s legal team argued that the foreign trip was essential for his eye treatment and requested a limited duration for the travel. Considering the circumstances, the court granted him permission to proceed.
Abhishek Banerjee is a prominent figure in West Bengal politics and is also the nephew of TMC chief and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. His foreign travel case has emerged amidst various legal issues and political controversies.
With the court’s approval, Banerjee’s path for foreign travel is now clear. However, the legal proceedings related to the case will continue, with upcoming hearings scheduled in court.
