Gaurav Gogoi is the Right Leader for Assam Congress: Wajed Ali Chaudhary

Guwahati, June 23: Wajed Ali Chaudhary, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly and Congress MLA, defended Gaurav Gogoi, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), on Tuesday. He dismissed AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal’s suggestion to appoint senior Congress leader Rakibul Hussain as the state Congress president.

In a conversation with reporters, Chaudhary stated that Gaurav Gogoi is the suitable leader to lead Congress in Assam. He labeled Ajmal’s comments as unnecessary interference in Congress’s internal matters.

“Gaurav Gogoi is a capable leader. He is here to stay. Congress is not a Muslim League; it is a secular party. Badruddin Ajmal has no right to comment on matters related to Gaurav Gogoi or the Congress leadership,” Chaudhary asserted.

This response from the Congress leader came a day after Ajmal expressed his views on the leadership of the Assam Congress. Ajmal had suggested that Rakibul Hussain, the Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri, should replace Gogoi as the APCC president. He argued that Hussain’s extensive political experience, organizational skills, and strong grassroots connections could bolster Congress in the upcoming electoral challenges.

However, Chaudhary clarified that decisions related to the Congress organization will be made by the party leadership, and the opinions of rival party leaders hold no significant weight. He also claimed that whenever a by-election occurs for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, Congress will emerge victorious.

Chaudhary emphasized that Congress workers across the state are united behind the current leadership and are working to strengthen the organization.

Notably, this exchange of statements between Chaudhary and Ajmal has sparked a new debate in Assam’s political landscape. Both Congress and AIUDF are striving to solidify their positions in opposition politics against the BJP-led coalition in the state.
