Mumbai, August 20: Actor Abhas Mehta, known for his roles in popular shows like ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?’, ‘Tu Suraj Main Saanjh Piyaji’, and ‘Hum Rahen Na Rahen Hum’, has joined the cast of the mythological series ‘Veers of Hastinapur’. He will portray the character of King Jarasandh. Mehta expressed that the primary reason for accepting this role was not just the character itself, but the opportunity to be part of the Mahabharata universe.
Mehta stated, “If I say that I joined the show solely because of Jarasandh, it wouldn’t be accurate. When I received the offer for ‘Veers of Hastinapur’, I didn’t know much about Jarasandh’s story. However, once I learned that the show is connected to the Mahabharata, my interest piqued. I had never been part of a story related to the Mahabharata before, so I didn’t want to miss this chance. I will soon be seen in the role of King Jarasandh.”
Abhas Mehta has previously been involved in mythological narratives. He shared that his journey in this genre began with ‘Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev’. He later played the character of Betal in ‘Singhasan Battisi’, a role that was particularly special to him as he had heard Betal’s stories since childhood.
Following that, Mehta was part of ‘Mahakali – Ant Hi Aaram Hai’, which he described as the best experience of his mythological journey. “In this show, I played a supervillain. It was a challenging role, as I had to work extensively on my acting, look, and overall presentation. After that, I worked in ‘Lakshmi Narayan – Sukh Samarthya Santulan’, which was based on the story of Lord Vishnu.”
Mehta believes that mythological shows allow actors to express themselves more freely, as characters are presented in grand and impactful ways. However, this freedom comes with significant responsibility.
He remarked, “The stories of the Mahabharata are not just TV shows for people. They have read them in books, heard them, and seen them in films and cartoons. Therefore, when portraying any mythological character, an actor must be very careful. It is crucial to remain honest to the story and character to avoid hurting the audience’s sentiments.”
For his role as King Jarasandh, Mehta has prepared extensively. He mentioned, “I have read a lot about Jarasandh and tried to gather as much information as possible. I am bringing something new to this character. It will be a surprise for the audience.”
Mehta added, “Throughout my career, the audience has liked me at times and disliked my characters at others. I hope they accept my portrayal of Jarasandh in the same way. I am working hard to do justice to this role.”
‘Veers of Hastinapur’ premiered on June 2, 2026, and is currently airing on Sony SAB.
