New Delhi, June 16: Amid ongoing actions and fears of demolition in the O-Zone area, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has initiated a significant public campaign starting Tuesday. The party announced a signature campaign aimed at securing protection for the colonies located in the O-Zone region.
Party leaders assert that this campaign is vital for safeguarding the rights of Delhi’s residents and their homes. Saurabh Bhardwaj, the Delhi state president, stated that AAP legislators, councilors, leaders, and volunteers will go door-to-door in the O-Zone colonies to collect signatures.
These signatures will subsequently be sent to the Prime Minister, demanding legislative action in Parliament to ensure the protection of the O-Zone area. Bhardwaj emphasized that just as unauthorized colonies have legal protection under the Delhi Special Provisions Act, the older colonies in the O-Zone should also receive similar safeguards.
He criticized the lack of effective solutions, noting that verbal assurances have not halted the ongoing demolition actions. Bhardwaj targeted the BJP, claiming that the central government, Delhi government, MCD, DDA, and other agencies are under the control of the same political party, yet residents are not receiving relief.
Bhardwaj claimed that many families have lived in the O-Zone for over 50 years, now facing the threat of displacement. Senior AAP leader and Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha mentioned that approximately 91 colonies in Delhi are affected by the O-Zone dispute.
He alleged that if the government genuinely intended to stop demolitions, it would not have revoked previously granted protections. Jha stated that a permanent solution to this issue can only be achieved through legislation in Parliament. He reiterated that the party’s goal is to convey the public’s voice to the Prime Minister, ensuring legal security for those residing in the O-Zone.
He added that mere promises are insufficient; legal measures must be enacted to protect people’s homes. AAP leader Shri Chand Vohra claimed that 45 colonies in the Badarpur assembly are impacted by the O-Zone issue. He accused the government of politicizing the matter for years without taking substantial steps toward resolution.
Vohra pointed out that several colonies included in the O-Zone dispute are located several kilometers away from the Yamuna River. Party leaders noted that the Delhi High Court has granted a deadline of December 31, 2026, regarding the houses in the O-Zone area, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear among residents.
The Aam Aadmi Party asserts that through this signature campaign, they will convey the public’s demands to Parliament and work towards a permanent solution for those affected by the O-Zone issue.
