PM Modi Congratulates Armenian PM Pashinyan, Strengthens India-Armenia Ties

New Delhi, June 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his party for their victory in the parliamentary elections. He also expressed gratitude for their assistance in the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening India-Armenia relations.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Prime Minister Modi shared, “I was delighted to receive a call from Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday. I congratulated him and his party on their recent victory in the Armenian parliamentary elections. Additionally, I thanked him for helping to safely evacuate Indian citizens stranded in Iran due to recent circumstances in West Asia.”

Modi emphasized, “We reiterated our shared commitment to enhance our warm and multifaceted partnership in crucial areas such as trade, defense, technology, and people-to-people connections.”

The Prime Minister expressed eagerness to work closely together to elevate India-Armenia relations to new heights.

It is noteworthy that the parliamentary elections in Armenia took place on June 7. The victory of the Civic Contract party has drawn attention amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The European Union and Western nations congratulated PM Nikol on this win. Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the economic disadvantages Armenia might face by fostering closer ties with Western countries, stating that the crisis in Ukraine had initiated attempts to join the EU.

Russia supplies gas to Armenia at $177.50 per 1,000 cubic meters, while European market prices, as Putin informed Pashinyan in April, exceed $600.

In the two weeks leading up to the elections, Russia imposed bans on the export of Armenian flowers, mineral water, brandy, fresh vegetables, and fruits.
