Russia Awaits US Response on Ukraine Peace Agreement Discussed in Alaska

Moscow, June 24: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Wednesday that the United States has yet to respond to its own proposals regarding a peace agreement for Ukraine, which were discussed in Anchorage, Alaska.

Speaking at the Primakov Readings International Scientific and Expert Forum, Lavrov noted that prior to the Russia-US summit, the US had presented “very clear proposals” that Russian President Vladimir Putin had accepted.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, Lavrov remarked, “We believed that an agreement had been reached. However, a week passed, then two weeks. US President Donald Trump traveled to Washington to consult with European leaders. There was also some discussion with Ukrainian President Zelensky. Yet, we still have not received a response to the American proposal we supported. This is the current situation.”

The Russian Foreign Minister emphasized that the agreement reached in Alaska was already in the form of a deal.

He added, “Now we are being told that discussions are not progressing, and further concessions will be necessary. We did not offer any concessions there. We only agreed on how to end the fighting and how to resolve the remaining issues at the negotiation table. We were confident that this would help achieve the goals set by the President, and that progress would be made gradually.”

Lavrov pointed out that the US had insisted on the need to address the Ukraine issue, and Russia believed that the matter had been resolved in Alaska. He also mentioned that subsequently, the US increased existing sanctions against Russia and imposed new ones.

During the Russia-United States summit in Anchorage, Presidents Putin and Trump discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Last December, Lavrov stated that despite predictions about the war’s end, Russia would continue to pursue its objectives in Ukraine. He affirmed that President Putin had clearly articulated Russia’s goals.

According to a TASS report, Lavrov mentioned in a meeting on the Ukraine agreement, “Our goals have been clearly outlined by our President without any ambiguity, and this was discussed in detail in Alaska. There was consensus on how to move towards these goals. This was not just about a ceasefire or a temporary halt, but a step towards lasting peace. We will proceed not according to someone else’s timeline, but along this path.”

He concluded, “The most important thing for us is the real issue. And the real issue is connected to Russia’s security and the safety of those Russian people whom the Kyiv government has labeled as terrorists and whose rights have been stripped away. This is our goal.”
