New Delhi, February 24: The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has entered its fifth year. However, both nations are engaged in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, facilitated by U.S. mediation. On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his thoughts.
President Zelensky stated, “Putin has not achieved his goals. He has not broken the Ukrainian spirit. He has not won this war. We have saved Ukraine, and we will do everything to bring peace and ensure justice.”
The conflict began on February 24, 2022, and has now extended into its fifth year. The ongoing war is largely attributed to geopolitical tensions and security concerns. From Russia’s perspective, a significant reason for the attack on Ukraine is its attempts to join NATO, which raises security fears.
Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that if Ukraine joins NATO, it would pose an increased threat to Russia. He argues that Western missiles and troops would turn towards Russia.
Since Ukraine gained independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, President Putin has viewed Ukraine’s westward shift towards European nations and the United States as a threat.
In 2014, pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych was ousted from the presidency of Ukraine. Following this, Russia retaliated by annexing Crimea. This led to conflict between Russian-backed separatists and the Ukrainian military in the eastern Donbas region (Donetsk and Luhansk). On February 21, 2022, Russia recognized the two self-proclaimed republics in Donbas as independent.
Subsequently, on February 24, 2022, Russia launched attacks on parts of Ukraine, marking the beginning of the ongoing war. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed a 28-point agreement to halt the conflict, which both countries are discussing under U.S. mediation.
