Vijayawada, June 4: Y.S. Sharmila Reddy, the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), has launched a sharp attack on the central government. She claimed that the government inherited a strong economy, reliable institutions, and immense public trust, but has weakened all three over the past decade.
Supporting the concerns raised by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, regarding the economic situation and democratic institutions, Reddy stated that the world is currently facing increasing economic uncertainty. In such times, Gandhi’s warnings have proven to be highly relevant.
Reddy emphasized that Gandhi has consistently warned the nation that an economy based solely on propaganda and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few cannot withstand major global shocks. This reality is now evident amid global economic instability.
According to Reddy, rising unemployment, economic pressure on families, declining purchasing power, increasing inequality, and the struggles of small and medium enterprises have exposed deep structural weaknesses in the Indian economy.
She accused the central government of focusing more on image-building and propaganda rather than on sustainable development fundamentals like job creation, productive investment, institutional strength, and social harmony.
“While the BJP has mastered the art of political marketing, governance cannot be run solely on slogans and propaganda. This has weakened the country’s economic resilience, making millions of ordinary Indians more vulnerable to the effects of a global economic downturn,” Reddy remarked.
She also expressed concern over the alleged weakening of democratic and constitutional institutions. Reddy noted that institutions responsible for accountability, transparency, and public trust have been undermined, leading to increased distrust among the populace.
The APCC president stated that people across the country are now feeling the growing gap between the BJP government’s promises and the ground realities. Rising inflation, lack of employment, and economic uncertainty are fueling public despair. India needs leadership that addresses real issues. Gandhi’s warnings serve as a ‘wake-up call’ for the nation. India requires a government that strengthens institutions, protects livelihoods, creates opportunities for youth, and prepares the country for future economic challenges.
