World Environment Day: Minister Giriraj Highlights Green Cover Shortage in India

New Delhi, June 5: On World Environment Day, NDA leaders are launching a tree plantation campaign under the initiative ‘One Tree in the Name of Mother’. Central Textile Minister Giriraj Singh warned that India currently faces an 11 percent deficit in per capita green cover.

Speaking to reporters, Singh stated, “Prime Minister Modi has consistently promoted the message of ‘One Tree in the Name of Mother’. Our per capita green cover, essential for environmental stability, is currently lacking by 11 percent.”

He emphasized that ideally, there should be trees on 0.05 hectares of land, but the country is still falling short of this target. Singh reminded everyone that Prime Minister Modi has previously discussed water conservation through the ‘Mission Amrit Sarovar’.

Additionally, he raised concerns about the environmental damage caused by carbon emissions. Singh noted that PM Modi is advocating for the use of renewable energy through initiatives like ‘PM Surya’.

He encouraged people to participate in the ‘One Tree in the Name of Mother’ campaign under social forestry. Meanwhile, during a visit to a market in Vasant Kunj, the central minister mentioned that the government has provided land to promote artisans. “We are now providing stalls for artisans here,” he said.

Singh added, “We also showcase products from award-winning artisans and other skilled craftsmen, with earnings directly transferred to their bank accounts.” His goal is to create an environment where artisans’ children can learn these skills and utilize technology. PM Modi has connected them to international markets through e-marketing for better product visibility.

The minister also referred to the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), which assists artisans in selling their products to American customers through trade fairs, global pavilions, and e-marketing. “Pictures of artisans’ products are taken and sold internationally through e-marketing,” he concluded.
