Tehran, June 26: Iran has made it clear that safe maritime navigation in the Hormuz Strait requires direct coordination with its authorities. The country will not accept any alternative routes created without considering security.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Any valid arrangement must be based on direct coordination with Iran and adhere to the provisions of the Islamabad Memorandum. If this does not happen, any alternative routes will be suspended.”
According to a report from Iran’s news agency IRNA, Gharibabadi emphasized that any alternative routes or decisions made without considering Iran’s strategic concerns cannot guarantee safe passage through the Hormuz Strait.
In response to recent attempts to create alternative maritime routes separate from the joint framework between Iran and Oman, Gharibabadi stated that safe passage in the Hormuz Strait cannot be ensured through vague arrangements or decisions that overlook the concerns of Iran as a coastal state.
On Thursday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared that only the routes authorized by Iranian officials are permitted for vessels passing through the Hormuz Strait.
The IRGC issued this warning in a statement on its official news website, Sepah News. The statement cautioned that navigation through routes other than those designated is dangerous and prohibited.
It further stated that everyone should be aware that only the routes specified by Iran should be used for passage through the Hormuz Strait. Navigating outside these routes is extremely hazardous and should be avoided.
