Jaipur: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje stated on Saturday that women have to work three times harder than men to establish themselves in politics. She made these remarks while speaking at the Jat Mahila Shakti Sangam event held at the Constitution Club in Jaipur.
During the event, Raje addressed the challenges faced by women in public life and emphasized the need to increase women’s participation in politics. She acknowledged the progress women have made over the years but stressed that there is still a long way to go before achieving equal representation.
Raja Ram Meel, president of the Jat Mahasabha, praised Raje for her role in securing reservations for the Jat community in Rajasthan. He highlighted her significant contribution during her leadership, which helped Jats in Dholpur and Bharatpur avail reservation benefits—a key decision for the community.
Raje cited statistical data to illustrate women’s progress in India since independence. She pointed out that female literacy was only 9 percent at the time of independence, which has now increased to 65 percent. She also noted that in the 1957 general elections, only 3 percent of candidates were women, whereas today the figure has risen to 10 percent.
Speaking about women’s representation in Parliament, she mentioned that the first Lok Sabha had only 22 women MPs, which has now increased to 74. Similarly, women’s strength in the Rajya Sabha has grown from 15 in 1952 to 42 today. However, she emphasized that this is still insufficient and women’s representation should be on par with men.
Raje highlighted the importance of education by citing the examples of President Droupadi Murmu and former President Pratibha Patil, crediting their success largely to education. She also appreciated leading women leaders and achievers such as Kamla Beniwal, Hema Malini, Sumitra Singh, Priyanka Chaudhary, Rita Chaudhary, and Shikha Meel for their contributions.
The event also featured participation from Sushila Barala, Padma Shri awardee Krishna Poonia, Kamla Kanswa, and Divya Madarna. Legislator Shikha Meel, former legislator Krishna Poonia, and former judge Rajendra Chaudhary shared their views on women’s empowerment and their increased involvement in politics.
