Kolkata, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that homes registered under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) will now be in the names of female members of families. This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The announcement came during the ‘Annapurna Day’ event held in Salt Lake, Kolkata, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. Adhikari revealed that a list has been prepared to construct over 5 million new homes, all of which will be registered in the names of women. He emphasized that these homes will be owned by women, with agreements also in their names.
“Our aim is to ensure that women in West Bengal become homeowners under the PMAY scheme. This demonstrates our dedication to empowering women in the state,” he said.
Adhikari further stated that the government aims to support women’s development, not merely provide financial assistance. “In the past four months, we established a commission to investigate atrocities against mothers and sisters. Any incident of crime against women will not be taken lightly; this is our promise,” he added.
He also addressed issues like child marriage and the rising number of pregnancies among girls under 18, asserting that the state government is tackling these matters with seriousness.
During the event, he announced the fourth installment of the Annapurna scheme, revealing that over 1.5 crore women have already received funds in their accounts. The remaining eligible applicants will receive payments throughout the day, with monthly transfers of ₹3,000 to women’s accounts.
Prime Minister Modi, addressing the event virtually, reassured beneficiaries that they would not need to pay any commission or “cut money” to receive funds. He noted that the recent changes in West Bengal were significantly influenced by the state’s mothers and sisters, marking women’s development as a priority for the new BJP government. “Our mantra is to speak less and work more. The Annapurna scheme was launched with this philosophy,” he stated.
