Minister Rakesh Khadse Reviews Sports Development in West Bengal

Kolkata, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : Rakesh Khadse, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, visited the regional center of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Salt Lake, Kolkata, on September 17, 2026. During his visit, he assessed the sports infrastructure, athlete development facilities, and support systems available at the center.

Khadse toured the hockey field, engaging with trainees and coaches to gather feedback on their training, facilities, and competitive needs. He also inspected the indoor facilities for gymnastics and table tennis, interacting with athletes and coaches to understand their requirements.

The minister visited the sports science department, discussing the role of scientific support in athlete development, conditioning, recovery, and performance enhancement. He emphasized the importance of integrating sports science, nutrition, rehabilitation, and performance support with quality coaching and regular competition experiences.

Khadse also examined the new 300-bed Khelo India hostel, reviewing the housing and support infrastructure being prepared for athletes. Subsequently, he toured the archery field and athletics facilities, speaking with coaches and trainees about their training needs.

Following the facility inspections, Khadse chaired a review meeting with SAI officials to discuss the functioning of the regional center. The meeting focused on athlete development, infrastructure, coaching, sports science, and support systems. He assured continuous collaboration from SAI to strengthen grassroots sports opportunities and pave the way for young athletes to reach higher levels of competition.

The minister highlighted that improved infrastructure, scientific training, quality coaching, and increased competitive opportunities could further enhance West Bengal’s rich sports culture and talent base. He stressed the necessity for young athletes to have access to essential facilities, training, and support systems to excel in sports.
