Kolkata, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata police have arrested Ashik Iqbal, the state secretary of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), for possession of counterfeit currency and firearms. The arrest occurred late Friday night during a routine checkpoint in Murshidabad district’s Hariharpara area.
Iqbal was driving a vehicle that was searched by officers, revealing bundles of fake currency notes and two weapons. He is affiliated with the party of local legislator Humayun Kabir. Alongside Iqbal, police also detained another individual, Bablu Sheikh, from Shahjajdipur.
According to police reports, a special team from the Hariharpara police station was conducting a checkpoint in the Garinama area when they became suspicious of a vehicle. Upon inspection, they discovered 108 fake notes, each valued at 500 rupees, totaling 54,000 rupees. In addition, two firearms and four rounds of ammunition were found in the car.
Following the arrest, both suspects were presented in the Murshidabad district court on Saturday. Authorities have initiated an investigation to trace the origin of the counterfeit notes and weapons, as well as their intended destination and purpose.
Preliminary inquiries suggest a potential connection between the suspects and a smuggling ring involved in trafficking fake currency and firearms. Shankharav Sarkar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Rezinagar assembly constituency, commented on the situation, emphasizing that the focus should be on governance rather than individual identities. The Rezinagar by-election is scheduled for October 6.
