Kolkata, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The West Bengal government has officially joined the Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), a central initiative aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps and strengthening the fishing sector. This announcement was made on September 21, 2026, during a meeting in New Town, Kolkata, between Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh.
Following a one-and-a-half-hour discussion, Adhikari confirmed the state’s inclusion in the PMMSY. He expressed gratitude to Singh for listening to their concerns and allocating ₹9 crore for the development of fisheries. Starting today, fishermen will have access to necessary loans and additional benefits.
Adhikari criticized the previous government led by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress for not including West Bengal in this scheme, which he claimed deprived fishermen of vital support. Singh supported the Chief Minister’s remarks, stating that the previous government’s lack of cooperation had stalled the central government’s efforts.
Adhikari further mentioned plans for the development of coastal areas, including the Sundarbans. He noted that South Bengal, with its seas and rivers, presents unique challenges for local fishermen. Following their proposals, the central minister approved six Amrit Sarovars in the Bankura and Purulia districts.
Rajiv Ranjan Singh highlighted that several projects, pending for the last five years, have been completed in the past four months.
