New Delhi, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court on September 21 that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged financial irregularities in donations to the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya has largely completed its investigation. A chargesheet is expected to be filed in the next two days.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohan was hearing petitions seeking a court-monitored investigation into the management of donations received by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the central and Uttar Pradesh governments, stated that a status report had been submitted in a sealed envelope. He added that the deadline for filing the chargesheet is September 25, and it will be submitted shortly.
The Uttar Pradesh government also noted that the investigation is nearly complete, with only formalities remaining before the chargesheet is presented to the competent court. The bench allowed the relevant session judge to issue appropriate orders in accordance with the law.
The status report revealed that the SIT has been analyzing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify suspects. The investigation uncovered 105 incidents of donation theft at the temple. It also indicated that receipts for valuable items received as offerings are generated through software and stored in lockers at the State Bank of India.
This development comes after the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to reorganize the SIT to ensure a fair, swift, and high-quality investigation. Previously, the government informed the court that senior IPS officers have been appointed to the SIT, which is now led by Inspector General Kiran S. The team also includes DIG Somen Verma and SSP Dr. Gaurav Grover from Ayodhya.
