Mumbai, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Abu Azmi, the president of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party, recently voiced strong criticism regarding discrepancies in the voter list under the Special Investigation Report (SIR). He highlighted concerns over the absence of names, including those of MPs and MLAs, from this crucial list. Azmi questioned the integrity of the electoral process, stating, “If even an MP or MLA’s name is missing from the voter list, it raises questions about the system. People will laugh at this situation.”
He further addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the demand for a Hindu nation, asserting that India is a secular country where Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians coexist. Azmi emphasized that no demands should contradict the Constitution, referencing the banned organization SIMI, which faced accusations of advocating for a Sharia-based governance. He argued that similar scrutiny should apply to those calling for a Hindu nation.
Citing the Constitution, Azmi reiterated that all citizens are entitled to equal rights and any attempt to infringe upon these rights is unconstitutional. He invoked the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, urging those who uphold the Constitution to oppose such divisive demands.
On the contentious issue of Tipu Sultan, Azmi defended the historical figure as a ruler who fought against British colonialism, asserting that his legacy cannot be erased. He noted that the matter of removing Tipu Sultan’s image would be decided by the High Court, which would clarify the situation.
Azmi acknowledged differing political opinions regarding Tipu Sultan but insisted that any final decision should adhere to legal and constitutional processes. He reiterated his concerns regarding the voter list, urging authorities to take these issues seriously to maintain the integrity of the electoral system.
