New Delhi, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Former CPI(M) MP Hannan Mollah has sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her decision to support the Congress candidate in the Nandigram by-election. Speaking to a news agency, Mollah remarked, “The person who fractured Congress is now clinging to it.” He expressed doubts about Banerjee’s party’s capacity to field candidates, questioning its relevance and ability to contest elections without a name or symbol.
Mollah pointed out that Banerjee had previously splintered Congress in 1997 to form the Trinamool Congress with backing from the RSS. He noted that as the RSS distances itself from her, she seeks refuge in Congress. “This is what we call hypocrisy in politics, where double standards prevail,” he stated.
In response to former Vice President Hamid Ansari‘s reference to Jawaharlal Nehru’s old statements, Mollah remarked that Congress is failing to fulfill its crucial role at a time when the country is grappling with fascism and a diminishing democracy. He emphasized that Congress must unite everyone against fascism, stating, “The first battle is against fascism. Forget everything else; we must defeat fascism first.”
Mollah also reacted to Baba Ramdev’s comments about increasing distances among various communities, including the upper castes and Scheduled Castes. He insisted on the need to uphold constitutional provisions, highlighting the ongoing economic marginalization of tribal and Dalit communities. He argued that reservation was introduced to protect around 35% of the population from upper caste oppression. Mollah concluded that the BJP and RSS are intent on dismantling reservation, urging the public to fight for their rights.
