Kolkata, March 20: In the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, a record number of 2,400 companies comprising Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), India Reserve Battalion (IRB), and armed police from other states will be deployed across both phases of the election.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Friday night that the first phase will take place on April 23, followed by the second phase on April 29. The ECI also stated that the first supplementary list of cases sent for judicial review under the logical discrepancy category during the Special Intensive Review (SIR) will be published on March 23 instead of March 20, as initially planned.
Currently, 480 companies of the CAPF are already stationed in West Bengal as part of advance deployment. According to the notification, after the conclusion of voting in the second phase on April 29, 200 companies of the CAPF will remain in the state until the completion of vote counting to ensure the security of EVMs, strong rooms, and counting centers.
Additionally, to maintain law and order and prevent post-election violence, which was rampant after the 2021 assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 500 companies of the CAPF will remain deployed until further notice.
The remaining 1,700 companies of the CAPF, IRB, and state armed police will be withdrawn after the voting concludes on April 29.
The ECI has directed the West Bengal government to prepare a detailed deployment plan in consultation with the CAPF, IRB, state armed police, and chief force coordinator. The movement and deployment of the CAPF will be coordinated by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Shalabh Mathur, the Inspector General of the CRPF West Bengal sector, has been appointed as the state force coordinator for the elections.
The notification further stated, “Necessary transport, logistics, accommodation, and other arrangements related to the deployment of CAPF/SAP/IRB within the state should be made by the state government as per the needs of the forces.”
