Mumbai, March 26: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is facing a significant challenge as its tribal leader and Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration Minister, Narhari Jirwal, finds himself embroiled in controversy. A purportedly obscene video featuring Jirwal with a transgender individual has gone viral on social media, intensifying scrutiny not only on him but also on the party led by Supriya Pawar, which is already grappling with multiple scandals.
The viral footage has sparked fierce criticism from the opposition, which claims that the individual in the video is indeed Minister Jirwal. They are demanding his resignation. So far, there has been no official response from Jirwal regarding the video, nor has the NCP issued any comments about this embarrassing situation.
Jirwal is the NCP MLA from the Dindori constituency in Nashik district. Reports suggest that the controversial video is approximately seven months old. With this incident, Jirwal becomes the fourth NCP leader to face turmoil in recent months, following former ministers Dhananjay Munde and Manikrao Kokate, as well as former Maharashtra State Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakanakar, who have all encountered similar predicaments.
Despite the lack of an official response from NCP leadership, discussions are rife in political circles about potential actions against Jirwal, especially in light of the opposition’s aggressive stance. If such measures are taken, Jirwal would join Munde and Kokate as the third NCP minister to lose his position.
All eyes are now on Deputy Chief Minister Supriya Pawar and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding their next steps. Just days ago, a clerk from the Food and Drug Administration department in Mumbai was caught red-handed accepting a bribe, raising further questions about the integrity of the department.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted an operation inside Jirwal’s ministerial office, resulting in the arrest of two individuals, which has led to increased criticism of Jirwal. Previously, Dhananjay Munde resigned over alleged ties to the suspects in the murder of a village head, while Manikrao Kokate lost his ministerial position due to a court ruling related to forgery for a government flat.
Last week, Rupali Chakanakar resigned from her position amid a growing scandal involving alleged connections with a self-styled guru accused of multiple rapes. The NCP may also seek her resignation from the Maharashtra NCP Women’s Wing presidency.
With party leaders consistently embroiled in controversies, managing these crises has become a significant challenge for NCP’s national president and Deputy Chief Minister Supriya Pawar. According to a senior party official, these issues, including Jirwal’s video and the resignations of Chakanakar, Munde, and Kokate, pose a threat to the ‘clean and efficient’ image presented by Ajit Pawar.
The task ahead for the NCP leadership is to discipline these leaders while preserving the party’s grassroots support and honoring the legacy of the late Ajit Pawar.
