Election Commission Reviews Preparations for Upcoming Polls in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry

New Delhi, April 2: The Election Commission of India held a review meeting with polling officials and central observers on Wednesday. The meeting reiterated essential instructions and guidelines for the electoral process in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, where voting is scheduled for April 9.

Under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the commission instructed central observers to ensure that elections are conducted in a festive atmosphere, free from fear, violence, or inducements.

A total of 282 central observers and the Chief Electoral Officers of Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry participated via video conferencing. The commission emphasized strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct and directed immediate action on any reported violations. Observers were also instructed to publicly share their contact information, as well as the venue and time for grievance hearings for the public, political parties, candidates, or their agents.

According to an election commission official, observers were tasked with ensuring that the training of polling center heads was conducted properly. They were also reminded to timely upload two-hour polling data and other information on ECI Net, ensure the correct use of ink, fill out Form 17-C, and share it with polling agents after voting concludes, as well as remove mock poll data.

Additionally, observers were directed to ensure that facilities at polling centers are available, such as mobile phone deposit services and benches for voters. The webcasting monitoring control room must also be thoroughly checked, and trial runs conducted in the presence of all staff to identify and report any errors.

The upcoming assembly elections will take place in four states and one union territory over the next month. Approximately 174 million eligible voters will participate across 824 constituencies, with voting occurring at 218,000 polling stations managed by around 2.5 million election officials. The Model Code of Conduct is in effect in the electoral states.
