Kolkata, April 2: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced candidates for the remaining 10 assembly seats in West Bengal on Wednesday. This announcement comes ahead of the two-phase assembly elections scheduled for later this month.
Previously, on March 29, the AICC had declared candidates for 284 out of the total 294 assembly seats. With this latest list, the party has now finalized candidates for all 294 seats. The newly announced seats include Alipurduar, Islampur, Gazole, Farakka, Sagardighi, Beldanga, Baduria, Ashoknagar, Shrirampur, and Pataaspur.
Notably, this list does not feature any prominent political figures. The Congress party has decided to contest all 294 assembly seats independently, breaking its previous electoral alliance with the CPI(M)-led Left Front.
Since the 2016 assembly elections, Congress and the Left Front had been collaborating under a seat-sharing arrangement, which continued until the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In the 2021 assembly elections, neither Congress nor the Left Front secured any seats in the state.
The assembly elections in West Bengal are set to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with voting occurring on 152 seats in the first phase and 142 in the second.
The electoral contest is expected to be primarily four-way, involving the Trinamool Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), CPI(M)-led Left Front, and Congress.
In some minority-dominated seats, the alliance between All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Humayun Kabir’s Aam Aadmi Udayan Party (AAUP) may also influence the electoral dynamics.
Earlier on Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused Congress of failing to respond to her appeal for support against the “Special Intensive Review” (SIR) of electoral lists, both in the state and across the country.
