Srinagar, April 14: In a significant law enforcement action, police in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, arrested 25 individuals on Tuesday for attempting to disrupt public order. This crackdown follows allegations of harassment against a teacher by a student, which led to his suspension.
Authorities reported that the arrested individuals were involved in attempts to incite unrest, and further identification of additional suspects is underway. A case has been registered against the teacher under relevant sections of the law, and an investigation has commenced. The Director of School Education has suspended the teacher and ordered a departmental inquiry.
In light of the sensitive situation, classes in several educational institutions in Sopore have been suspended until April 28.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iftikhar Talib confirmed that a case has been initiated against the teacher following the student’s allegations. A Joint Director of Education has been appointed as the investigating officer, with instructions to submit a report within 15 days.
The allegations sparked protests among students in Sopore, who demanded strict action against the teacher.
Additional Deputy Commissioner S.A. Raina stated that academic activities at the Government Higher Secondary School, Boys Higher Secondary School, and Government Degree College Sopore will remain suspended from April 15 to April 18. This precautionary measure aims to maintain law and order in response to the protests related to the harassment allegations.
Sopore, known as the “Apple Town” of Kashmir, has not always made headlines for positive reasons. Once considered a stronghold of separatist sentiments, the town has experienced relative peace since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Sopore is part of the Baramulla district in northern Kashmir, an area recognized for its sensitivity regarding law and order. Consequently, it has been designated as a police district, led by a Superintendent of Police (SP).
To effectively manage law and order and curb militancy, Sopore was officially established as a separate police district in northern Kashmir on January 21, 2010. Despite being geographically part of Baramulla district, it operates as an independent administrative unit within the Jammu and Kashmir police system.
