New Delhi, August 1 (HS): The Election Commission on Friday announced the schedule for the election to the post of Vice President of India. If there is more than one candidate, polling will be held on September 9. The official notification for the election will be issued on August 7.
According to the Election Commission, the last date for filing nominations is August 21. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 22, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25. If more than one candidate remains in the fray, voting will take place in the Parliament House on September 9, with counting scheduled for the same day.
Electoral College Comprises Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Members
An electoral college is constituted for the Vice Presidential election, consisting of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha. These members cast their votes. Political parties are not allowed to issue whips for this election.
As per the Commission, five of the 233 elected seats in the Rajya Sabha are currently vacant, and there are 12 nominated members. The Lok Sabha has 543 members, with one seat vacant. Thus, out of the total 788 seats across both Houses, 782 members will form the electoral college for the Vice Presidential election.
Ballot papers will be used in the election, and the Commission will also provide the pens for voting. The Election Commission conducts the election under Article 324 of the Constitution. Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Mody has been appointed as the Returning Officer for the election.
