Armed Attack in Bannu, Pakistan Claims Lives of Two Policemen

Islamabad, June 12: In a tragic series of events in Bannu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, two policemen were shot dead by armed assailants. Authorities confirmed the incidents on Friday.

According to reports from Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, one police constable was returning home after attending an event when unknown attackers opened fire on him on the Bannu-Miranshah road. He sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

In a separate incident, another police constable was shot outside his home by unidentified gunmen. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The police have launched search operations in the respective areas to apprehend the attackers involved in both cases.

Earlier this week, a police officer was killed, and two others injured in attacks on police stations in Killa Abdullah, Pishin, and Dukki districts of Balochistan province. Local media reported this information on Thursday, citing officials.

According to authorities, a group of armed individuals on motorcycles attacked a police check post in Gilo with heavy weaponry and subsequently set it ablaze. Killa Abdullah’s police superintendent, Athar Rasheed, stated that there were no fatalities from this attack.

He noted that the assailants made off with two AK-47 rifles, a private vehicle parked at the check post, and a motorcycle. The fire caused significant damage to the check post, destroying records and furniture.

Another attack targeted the Sultan police station in the Saranan area of Pishin. Reports indicate that the attackers seized weapons from the police personnel and used explosives to damage the building.

Authorities also reported an attack on a police station in Dukki on Tuesday night, where intense gunfire erupted between police and assailants, resulting in one police officer’s death and two others injured.

A recent monthly security report from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) indicated that the security situation in Pakistan worsened in May. Notably, there has been an increase in militant attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The report highlighted a resurgence of militant attacks in May after a period of decline. The rise in attacks, fatalities, suicide bombings, and abductions underscores that security challenges remain severe.
