Mumbai, June 12: A fierce storm accompanied by pre-monsoon rains wreaked havoc in Shyopur district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday afternoon. In two separate incidents, four people, including three members of the same family, lost their lives, and one person was injured.
The most tragic incident occurred in the village of Suswada, located in the Awda police station area. During the storm, a temporary tin shed collapsed, resulting in the deaths of three agricultural laborers. According to Awda police station chief Dharmendra Malviya, the four-member family was guarding a moong bean crop in Rajpura village. As the weather turned severe, they sought shelter under the tin shed.
Unfortunately, strong winds caused a concrete wall adjacent to the shed to collapse, leading to the shed’s downfall and trapping everyone underneath. The deceased were identified as Bhima Adivasi (40), his wife Seema Adivasi (38), and their daughter-in-law Rajwati Adivasi (21). Another family member sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital in Kelwada, Rajasthan.
Upon receiving the news, police and local residents quickly launched a rescue operation. All trapped individuals were extracted from the debris and taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation, collecting statements from eyewitnesses.
In a separate incident, an auto-rickshaw parked on the roadside overturned due to the strong winds in the Salapura area. An 80-year-old woman, Bharosi Bai Vaishnav, was killed on the spot as a result.
The storm and rain caused widespread damage across the district, uprooting trees, damaging thatched houses, and disrupting power lines. Many areas experienced power outages, and fallen trees blocked roads, affecting traffic for several hours.
However, the rain provided some relief from the intense heat. According to the meteorological department, the maximum temperature in Shyopur dropped from 41 degrees Celsius earlier in the week to around 36 degrees Celsius on Friday. The department has forecast light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in Shyopur and surrounding districts over the next 24 hours.
