Assam Begins Process for Silchar Municipal Corporation Elections

Guwahati, June 12: The Assam State Election Commission (SEC) officially commenced the election process for the newly formed Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday. The commission has released a detailed schedule for preparing, updating, and publishing the ward-wise voter list for the corporation’s 42 wards.

According to a notification issued by State Election Commissioner Ranjan Sharma, the voter list for the upcoming municipal elections will be based on the assembly electoral rolls, with January 1, 2026, set as the eligibility date.

As per the announced schedule, the initial work for preparing the voter list will take place from June 12 to June 18. Following this, the updating of the voter list will occur from June 19 to June 28. The draft voter list will be published on June 29, and claims and objections can be submitted until July 6.

Claims and objections will be resolved by July 13, and the final voter list will be published on July 15.

This notification comes after the Assam government established the Silchar Municipal Corporation, consisting of 42 wards, under the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022. This move is seen as a significant change in the city’s urban administrative framework.

Notably, the 142-year-old Silchar Municipal Board was officially transformed into a municipal corporation in June 2024. The shift from this administrative structure, which has existed since 1882, is regarded as a historic achievement for the largest city in the Barak Valley.

Political leaders have expressed optimism that the formation of the municipal corporation will provide Silchar with greater financial resources and accelerate infrastructure development. However, local residents still focus on improving basic urban amenities such as clean drinking water, better drainage systems, and solid waste management.

With the voter list preparation process underway, all eyes are now on the announcement of the election dates for the Silchar Municipal Corporation’s first elections.
