Vellore, March 19: The century-old weekly animal market in Poigai, near Vellore, Tamil Nadu, is facing significant challenges. The strict enforcement of the election code ahead of the assembly elections has severely slowed down this traditional market.
Located near the Poigai bus stand along the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway, the market is about 10 kilometers from Vellore. Every Tuesday, thousands of traders would gather here for the buying and selling of livestock. Typically, over 2,000 traders would attend, facilitating the sale of around 1,500 animals, resulting in a multi-crore business.
However, since the implementation of the election code, a cash limit of ₹50,000 has been imposed, directly impacting the market’s operations. The effects were evident during the recent market day, with a noticeable decrease in both the number of traders and the influx of animals.
This market primarily relies on cash transactions, making it increasingly difficult due to stringent monitoring and inspections. Flying squads and surveillance teams are conducting regular checks, and actions are being taken against cash transactions without proper documentation.
