Lucknow, March 6: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday flagged off 50 Quick Response Team (QRT) vehicles at Lok Bhawan. He stated that this initiative by the Honda India Foundation will significantly enhance the state’s security framework.
The Chief Minister emphasized that for the first time in a democratic setup, law and order became a key issue during elections. This has led to a historic achievement where a government has been re-elected after completing its five-year term. Since 2017, the police department has transformed the previously chaotic and unrest-ridden state into a safer Uttar Pradesh. He reiterated that security is the foundation of development, a fact proven by the Uttar Pradesh Police.
Adityanath mentioned that various steps and reforms have been implemented to change the perception of Uttar Pradesh. The results are evident. In 2017, there were 9,500 PRV vehicles in the police department, which has now increased to over 15,500. Similarly, the number of two-wheelers has risen from 3,000 to over 9,200. This increase is not just numerical; it has significantly reduced the police response time. Quick action in emergencies builds trust, which is essential for transformation.
He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has outlined three critical pillars for model policing: infrastructure, technology, and mobility. Before 2017, the police budget barely reached ₹16,000 crores and often went unspent. Many districts lacked basic facilities, making it challenging for the police to deliver results. Officers were forced to live in dilapidated barracks with outdated equipment.
Today, the tallest building in 55 districts is the barrack for Uttar Pradesh police personnel, providing better living conditions. The state is also continuously constructing model police stations and fire stations to modernize police and disaster services.
The Chief Minister highlighted that previously, training for around 3,000 police personnel could be conducted simultaneously. However, due to limited training capacity and a backlog in police recruitment, the process was slow. The state government reached out to other states for assistance, and several agreed to help.
Additionally, discussions were held with the army and paramilitary forces, who also offered support. As a result, training capacity has been increased to about 17,000 to 20,000, and with further assistance, it has now reached approximately 30,000. Currently, 60,244 police constables have been recruited, all trained at Uttar Pradesh’s own training centers.
The Chief Minister mentioned that three new criminal laws were implemented last July, mandating forensic evidence for cases with sentences exceeding seven years. Before 2017, Uttar Pradesh had only two forensic labs, but this number has now grown to 12. A world-class State Forensic Institute has also been established under the Uttar Pradesh Police, offering degree, diploma, and certificate courses.
Through this initiative, training is being provided not only to police personnel but also to youth interested in forensic science. Six A-grade forensic labs are under construction in each district, along with two mobile forensic units per district to assist in evidence collection and investigation at crime scenes. Several new units have been formed to strengthen security in the state.
Adityanath concluded by stating that ongoing efforts are being made to enhance infrastructure, technology, and mobility within the police system. When technology and transformation work together, it yields results, fostering trust among the common people. Today, major investors from across the country and the world are eager to invest in Uttar Pradesh.
