Patna, April 3: Bihar has set a new record in revenue collection for the financial year 2025-26. Minister of Commercial Taxes, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, announced on Thursday that the department collected ₹43,324 crore through GST, VAT, and other sources during the past fiscal year.
While detailing the achievements in tax revenue collection, he noted that the total revenue collection amounted to ₹43,324.79 crore, marking a 4.09% increase from the previous year. Secretary of the department, Sanjay Kumar Singh, added that out of this total, ₹32,801 crore was generated from Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is an 11.7% increase compared to the revenue collected in the financial year 2024-25.
Yadav mentioned that the central government made a ₹724 crore deduction to compensate for the reduction in the IGST balance, resulting in the state’s GST collection dropping to ₹32,077.22 crore. Despite this deduction, Bihar recorded a 9.20% growth in GST collection, while the national average stood at 6%.
He highlighted that Bihar ranks fourth in the country for GST collection growth. The minister emphasized that despite reductions in GST slabs on consumer goods and the assembly elections, the department achieved commendable gross collection figures. In March 2026 alone, the total tax collection under GST in Bihar saw a 13% increase compared to March of the previous year.
The Commercial Taxes Department collects taxes in four categories: GST, VAT on petrol and diesel, electricity duty, and professional tax. Yadav reported that the department raised ₹11,247.57 crore in non-GST collections, including ₹10,037.38 crore from VAT on petrol, ₹983.81 crore from electricity duty, and ₹226.38 crore from professional tax.
The minister also noted significant progress in revenue collection from registrations. In the financial year 2025-26, the registration department achieved ₹8,403.46 crore against a target of ₹8,250 crore, reaching 101.86% of the goal. In the previous fiscal year, the department collected ₹7,648.88 crore against a target of ₹7,500 crore, resulting in an increase of ₹754.58 crore in the current financial year.
He mentioned the top five districts contributing to revenue from registrations, stating that on March 31 alone, 14,905 documents were registered, generating ₹107.74 crore in revenue.
