New Delhi, April 3: BJD MP Sulata Dev criticized the central government on Thursday for introducing the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill 2026.
In an exclusive interview, she stated that NGOs receiving foreign funding already comply with FCRA regulations and are monitored by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Dev questioned, “Why is the FCRA bill being introduced? If any NGO misuses funds, action can already be taken against them, including blacklisting.” She emphasized that the government should focus on initiatives that benefit the public rather than distracting them with new bills.
The MP accused the government of raising gas and oil prices in election-bound states. She remarked, “The government promised to create two crore jobs in a year. Fourteen years have passed; where are the 28 crore jobs? The government merely wants to divert public attention with irrelevant bills.”
On the current FCRA law, Sulata Dev noted that there are already stringent provisions in place. If these are followed correctly, no funds can be misused. She claimed that the new amendment bill seeks to impose unnecessary control over the NGO sector.
Regarding the West Bengal assembly elections, Sulata Dev raised concerns about the Election Commission. She stated, “Why are people questioning the Election Commission these days? A letter with the BJP’s stamp went viral recently. How is that possible?” She warned that if the Election Commission does not function properly, the public will lose trust in it. Dev stressed the importance of maintaining fairness in the electoral process, or else the foundation of democracy will weaken.
The BJD MP accused the central government of wanting to impose stricter control over NGOs through the FCRA amendment, while the existing laws are sufficient. She urged the government to address real issues such as unemployment, inflation, and development instead of targeting NGOs.
