Rahul Gandhi Appeals to PM Modi to Withdraw Cases Against Dalit Youth from 2018 Protests

New Delhi, April 3: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his letter, he highlighted that eight years ago, millions of Dalit and tribal youth protested against the weakening of the SC/ST Act, resulting in numerous arrests. While Parliament strengthened the law, innocent youth still bear the burden of criminal cases.

In the letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi requested the withdrawal of all cases registered during the peaceful protests held on April 2, 2018, against the dilution of the SC/ST Act. Tragically, 14 Dalit youth lost their lives on that day. These protests were triggered by a judicial ruling that undermined the SC/ST Act.

He further emphasized that this law grants millions of Dalit and tribal individuals the right to seek justice and protection against violence and discrimination. It is the result of a long-standing movement that has aimed to end impunity for offenders and empower victims to demand justice.

The protests on April 2 also highlighted the increasing violence and discrimination against Dalit and tribal communities. Young demonstrators exercised their constitutional rights, demanding justice, equality, and respect. Following the protests, many innocent youths were arrested and continue to face criminal charges today.

Rahul Gandhi has urged the government to review all cases against the youth related to the April 2, 2018 protests under the SC/ST Act. He called for the withdrawal or dismissal of these cases, aiming to relieve innocent youths from the burden of prolonged legal processes.

Sharing the letter on the social media platform X, he reiterated that eight years ago, millions of Dalit and tribal youth protested against the weakening of the SC/ST Act, leading to many arrests. While Parliament strengthened the law, innocent youth still carry the weight of these cases.

He concluded by asserting that a strong SC/ST Act is their right, and peaceful protest is their entitlement. Today, he urged the Prime Minister to consider withdrawing all cases with a sensitive and just perspective.
