Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh government has firmly rejected opposition allegations regarding the SIR draft voter list 2026. Minister Jayveer Singh emphasised that the entire process should not be politicised. He clarified that the SIR initiative is an important step by the Election Commission aimed at ensuring transparency and accuracy in the electoral system.
Speaking on the issue, the minister explained that under the SIR process, names of fake, ineligible, deceased, or migrated voters have been removed, with around 2.89 crore names deleted from the list. He assured that clear and transparent provisions exist for corrections, and genuine voters whose names were mistakenly removed can get them re-included.
Jayveer Singh added that booth-level officers (BLOs) will conduct on-ground verification of voter lists to ensure every eligible citizen is included. He dismissed opposition claims as baseless and accused them of attempting to undermine the constitutional institution of the Election Commission. The minister stressed that the sole objective of SIR is to prepare a clean, reliable, and error-free voter list, and all political parties and citizens should cooperate in this effort.
On questions related to the stone-pelting incident on police during a demolition drive near a mosque in Delhi, Jayveer Singh took a firm stance. He stated that strict action will be taken against anyone involved, following due legal process. The minister underscored that no one is above the law and maintaining peace and order remains the government’s top priority.
Responding to the controversial slogans raised on the JNU campus, he said such behaviour is unacceptable to the nation, society, and government. Jayveer Singh highlighted that the Prime Minister and Chief Minister represent all citizens, not any single political party. He condemned disrespect towards these leaders as disrespect towards the country itself and called for serious reflection by society on such indecent language and remarks.
Regarding the clash involving Congress workers and officials inside the party office in Madhubani, Bihar, in the presence of the state president, the minister commented that the Congress party is losing ground. He said the internal conflicts reveal the party’s weak position, further evidenced by Bihar voters rejecting Congress in the assembly elections.
