Beijing, June 25: The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway has officially completed five years of operation, as announced by the China Railway Group. Additionally, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway will celebrate its 20th anniversary of full operation on July 1.
As Tibet’s first electrified railway, the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway spans a total length of 435.48 kilometers, stretching from Lhasa in the west to Nyingchi in the east. It is designed to operate at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour. Notably, over 90% of the railway is situated at an altitude exceeding 3,000 meters above sea level. The route crosses the Yarlung Tsangpo River 16 times and features a remarkable 75% ratio of bridges and tunnels. Since its launch on June 25, 2021, this railway has significantly improved rail connectivity in southeastern Tibet.
Key cities along this railway include Lhasa, Shannan, and Nyingchi, collectively referred to as the “five cities within a three-hour economic radius.” The fastest journey from Lhasa to Nyingchi can now be completed in just 3 hours and 49 minutes.
According to statistics, in the past five years, the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway has transported over 6.25 million passengers and more than 2 million tons of cargo. This railway has played a crucial role in accelerating economic and social development in Tibet.
