Strengthening Canada-India Trade Relations: High Commissioner Meets Commerce Secretary

New Delhi, June 25: The Canadian High Commissioner, Christopher Kuter, met with India’s Commerce Secretary, Rajesh Aggarwal, to discuss new ways to strengthen the Canada-India trade partnership. This meeting took place on Wednesday, as announced by the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi.

The main points of the meeting were shared on the social media platform X, highlighting that the objective was to promote trade, investment, and shared prosperity between the two nations. There is optimism that progress will be made towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in the near future.

The Indian Commerce Department referenced the meeting with Secretary Aggarwal, noting that he engaged with High Commissioner Kuter to discuss enhancing economic cooperation, deepening trade and investment ties, and advancing ongoing CEPA negotiations.

Secretary Aggarwal praised the efforts of both parties and mentioned the positive outcomes from the recent visit of India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, to Canada. This visit included the largest high-level Indian business delegation to date.

It was noted that India and Canada are working with renewed momentum to strengthen their economic partnership and increase bilateral trade. Both countries aim to elevate bilateral trade to $50 billion.

Recently, Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister discussed their bilateral relations during a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Évian, France. They reviewed the significant progress made in bilateral ties and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, innovation, education, and people-to-people connections.

During this time, Mark Carney indicated that both countries are making good progress towards finalizing a free trade agreement. India and Canada have signaled a new momentum in their relations, with leaders expressing confidence that the free trade agreement will be completed soon.

Last month, Carney stated that a free trade agreement with India would represent a significant change for Canadian workers and businesses.
