New Delhi, February 23: On Monday, the ‘Rajaji Utsav’ will be celebrated at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking the unveiling of a statue of C. Rajagopalachari, the first Indian Governor-General of independent India. The ceremony will take place in the central courtyard of the presidential complex.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 131st episode of his monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’, recalled his call for ‘Panch-Pran’ during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. He emphasized the importance of freeing the nation from a colonial mindset. He noted that India is now prioritizing symbols connected to its culture over those of colonial rule, highlighting the significant step taken by Rashtrapati Bhavan in this direction.
The Prime Minister shed light on Rajagopalachari’s contributions to public life, stating, “He was the first Indian Governor-General of independent India. He viewed power as a service rather than a position. His conduct, restraint, and independent thinking in public life continue to inspire us.”
Expressing regret over the persistence of colonial symbols post-independence, Modi pointed out that statues of British administrators remained in the Rashtrapati Bhavan complex for decades, while symbols of the freedom movement and national leadership were not given similar recognition.
He remarked, “Unfortunately, even after independence, statues of British administrators were allowed to remain in Rashtrapati Bhavan, while the statues of our greatest sons were denied space.”
Modi specifically mentioned the statue of British architect Edwin Lutyens, stating, “There was also a statue of British architect Edwin Lutyens in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Now, this statue will be replaced by that of Rajaji.”
The Prime Minister also informed listeners that an exhibition dedicated to C. Rajagopalachari will be held as part of the Rajaji Utsav celebrations. This exhibition will be open to the public from February 24 to March 1.
He encouraged citizens to visit the exhibition whenever possible to learn more about Rajagopalachari’s life and legacy.
