Unseasonal Rains Devastate Farmers, Wheat Crops Suffer Heavy Losses

Chandigarh, April 8: Unseasonal rains across various parts of the country have raised alarm among farmers. The primary rabi crop, wheat, is expected to suffer significant damage.

Conditions in the Kharar area of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Punjab, are dire. Continuous rainfall has severely affected crops. A local farmer reported that 10 to 12 acres of his land have been impacted. He warned that if the rains persist for another 2 to 4 days, the damage could worsen. Fields are flooded, exacerbating the situation.

In Sangrur, another farmer indicated that unseasonal rains and strong winds have ruined about 70 percent of his crop. He expressed that farmers who lease land face even greater challenges, as they still have to pay rent despite the crop losses. This situation has increased their financial burdens, leading them to demand compensation from the government.

In Barnala, hail and rain have crippled farmers. Hardeep Singh, a local farmer, stated, “The losses are substantial.” Fellow farmer Lakhbir Singh echoed his concerns, noting the severe damage to crops and the alarming conditions.

In Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, unseasonal rains and high winds have wreaked havoc. Standing crops have been flattened, and harvested crops have been ruined by water. One farmer lamented, “My wheat crop is completely destroyed, and my mustard crop is also lost.”

Another farmer reported extensive damage, with all crops ruined by flooding. He appealed for government assistance, stating that any help could provide much-needed relief to farmers.
