Universities Must Partner in Public Policy: Vijender Gupta

Faridabad, August 23: Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta emphasized the need for accurate facts, reliable research, and grassroots evidence for effective legislation. He urged universities to become active partners in delivering this information to assemblies and governments.

Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Vice Chancellors Conclave 2026’ at an international institute in Faridabad, Gupta highlighted the role of legislatures in creating laws, approving budgets, and holding governments accountable. He noted that universities can strengthen this process through research-based inputs, expert opinions on environmental laws, and increased student participation in democratic institutions.

The two-day conclave, themed “Green Campus: Empowering Higher Educational Institutions for a Sustainable and Resilient Future,” addressed pressing environmental issues. Gupta pointed out the realities of climate change, citing record heat in Delhi and the National Capital Region, winter smog, polluted air, sudden floods, and declining groundwater levels.

He stated that the condition of the Yamuna River, air quality, and groundwater scarcity are not just environmental concerns but also questions of public health, economic stability, and the rights of future generations. While laws and policies are essential, sustainability must also become part of values, habits, and lifestyles.

Gupta posed a critical question: “If Indian universities are not ‘green,’ how can India’s future be ‘green’?” He outlined three roles for universities in India’s green transition: as models, as educators, and as centers for research and solutions.

He remarked, “Your campuses are our laboratories.” Successful models can inspire policymakers to replicate them at state and national levels. Students who adopt sustainable habits over four to five years will carry these practices into their workplaces, communities, and families, thereby impacting an entire generation.

In a post on the social media platform X, Gupta reiterated the crucial role of higher education institutions in shaping a greener, more sustainable, and future-ready India. Creating environmentally responsible campuses, promoting innovation, and empowering youth with a strong understanding of sustainability will significantly contribute to building a robust and developed nation.
