Varanasi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The water level of the Ganges River in Varanasi has been steadily decreasing, currently dropping at a rate of one centimeter per hour. As of now, the water level stands at 68.92 meters, which is below the warning threshold. Despite this decline, boat operations on the river remain suspended.
On Saturday, the water level had reached 69.28 meters. The reduction in the Ganges’ water level has diminished the immediate threat of flooding. Presently, the water level is approximately 1.34 meters below the warning point of 70.26 meters.
Pandit Omkarnath Tripathi reported that the water level has decreased by about 4.5 feet, leading to the accumulation of dirt and debris along the riverbanks. He noted that the rising water levels had impacted local livelihoods, making it challenging for residents and pilgrims to take ritual baths in the river. A drop in bathing has also resulted in fewer religious ceremonies.
Local resident Vikas Kumar Sahni mentioned that boating services are currently halted and will only resume once the water level decreases further, which may take some time.
In Prayagraj, the water levels of both the Ganges and Yamuna rivers have also fallen below danger levels. Recent data indicated that the Yamuna River in Naini recorded a water level of 81.02 meters, while the Ganges at Fafamau reached 81.90 meters. In Chatnagar, the Ganges was noted at 80.57 meters.
Significant drops in water levels have also been observed near the STP at the Baxi Dam, where the water level was recorded at 81.18 meters. The danger threshold for the Ganges and Yamuna in Prayagraj is set at 84.734 meters, and both rivers are currently well below this limit.
