New Delhi, May 19: Union Minister for Water Resources C.R. Patil reviewed the expanded role of externally funded projects on Tuesday. The projects assessed included sustainable irrigation development in Assam, the economic impacts of the Brahmaputra River’s waterway changes, and studies on water management practices in Northeast India.

Speaking at the sixth meeting of the governing body of the Northeast Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM), which operates under the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, Patil emphasized the importance of scientific water management.

According to an official statement, he also highlighted the need for capacity building and greater state participation to address emerging challenges in the Northeast region.

Patil reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening NERIWALM’s role as a center of excellence in water and land management.

A key agenda item included a proposal to establish an irrigation sector laboratory and demonstration farm to promote research, field performance, and dissemination of irrigation technologies in the region.

The governing body discussed recommendations for scholarship support for M.Tech and Ph.D. students, faculty development, enhancing research capabilities, and advancing studies on climate and GIS-based applications in water resource management.

Additionally, the meeting reviewed findings from a significant study on livelihood challenges faced by families affected by erosion in the Brahmaputra Valley and discussed sustainable rehabilitation and livelihood interventions for displaced communities.
